What is the future of fashion? How will fashion producers incorporate new standards of sustainability within their production? Is sustainable fashion luxurious? How will industry evolve to meet the demands of increasingly informed consumers in a socially, economically and environmentally conscious climate?
The rapidly evolving field of sustainable fashion is an undeniably important movement within contemporary fashion. Creating new solutions for sustainable fashion requires innovation, creativity and interdisciplinary sass. In October ESMOD Berlin will present the first group of graduate projects from their new International Masters Programme – Sustainability in Fashion. The cutting edge programme takes a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to design positioning itself as ecologically, ethically, socially and economically sustainable.
Showcasing the work of the 12 pioneering students, audiences saw an array of inspiring design solutions in men and women's fashion, marketing, product design, footwear and textile production. The interdisciplinary teaching method inspires a broad and conceptual approach to the projects, integrating different cultural and historical influences with design processes to create truly unique outcomes. One student, inspired by the Austrian Lederhosen and the tradition of Tracht will create a collection of sustainable sneakers. Another has created a luxury collection in cooperation with a Nepalese NGO using banana fibre, wood an metal for textiles and accessories.
The exhibition and performance was held at the iconic artist lab Platoon Kunsthalle; the ephemeral architecture of the site is created using forty shipping containers to construct a three tiered industrial chic multi-purpose space. The graduates were supported by the Berlin based agency Blue Scope Communications in concept design, planning, implementation and staging of the show and exhibition. The sound track for the evening will be arranged by Berlin/New York based music collective Notic Nastic and the welcome drink generously was provided by Galeries Lafayette.
The official opening and performance was by invitation only and the general public was invited to view the exhibition on Saturday and Sunday the 13th and 14th of October.
